The role

We're seeking a seasoned and dynamic leader to head up our inhouse legal department and join us as General Counsel. Reporting to the Group General Counsel, this role delivers strategic and operational legal advice through internal and external resources that is commercial and fit-for-purpose for A&G success. This role will take a hands-on approach to ensure a scalable operating model is designed and implemented as well as leading the legal division to ensure appropriate solutions are developed to effectively manage legal and commercial risk and compliance.

Additionally, your key responsibilities will be focused on the following areas: 

Leadership

• Role model our values, culture, and ways of working. This involves driving high performance with high integrity, and finding solutions that mutually benefit our customers, business, employees, and suppliers. 

• Demonstrate commercial discipline, challenger ambition, effective risk management and a ‘One Team’ mindset. 

• Partner with the business to support achievement of the strategic objectives of the business. 

• Be a role model within the business to deliver on A&G’s core values of Care and Passion, Vision & Creativity, Ownership & Integrity, and the Strategic Priorities of the Group.

• Provide guidance, mentorship and professional development opportunities to direct reports and the Group Legal team. 

• Act as a key strategic advisor and aid the Group General Counsel to make informed decisions that not only align with legal requirements but also strategically minimise potential legal risks and leverage commercial opportunities. 

• Identify potential legal risks and devise strategies to minimise or mitigate them.

General

• Design and implement a scalable operating model for the legal team in the context of a growing business including developing models, processes and procedures and reporting tools for the effective and efficient running of the Legal department

• Lead and mentor the legal team to deliver timely, high-quality legal support and advice across all business functions

• Act as a senior legal advisor to the Group General Counsel and senior leadership teams

• Contribute to the development and implementation of the group’s legal strategy with Group General Counsel 

• Drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial agreements and manage the legal life cycle of those agreements

• Providing legal review and signoff, as appropriate for customer-facing materials

• Providing advice and maintaining Auto & General’s IP portfolio including copyright, trademark and patent applications and oversee enforcement of Auto & General’s IP rights to protect the brand

• Proactively supporting through legal advice to the Group General Counsel in the engagement with other regulators including APRA, ASIC, OAIC and the CGC

• Developing a framework for collateral review which supports efficient review through the business, compliance and legal, empowering the right people in the right way

• Managing the relationships for the Group with external law firms, including oversight of the law firms used 

• Management for the corporate legal structure of the Group, working with the Group General Counsel, CEO and Executive, including compliance with APRA, ASIC and other regulatory requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

You are an accomplished legal professional with a proven track record in driving performance and enhancing workplace culture, skilled in commercial law, insurance law, corporate governance and regulatory compliance. You excel in strategic planning and team management. With strong commercial acumen and a focus on continuous improvement and risk mitigation, you effectively address complex legal issues and implement frameworks that support the business.
